Place du Capitole

The Capitole of Toulouse is the most iconic monument in the city. Located on the famous Place du Capitole, it houses the city hall and the Théâtre du Capitole.

A masterpiece of Romanesque art, the Basilica of Saint-Sernin is one of the largest Romanesque churches in Europe. Its octagonal bell tower, visible from afar, has dominated the Toulouse landscape for centuries. A UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela, it is one of Toulouse's most iconic monuments. Built in honor of Saint Saturnin (or Sernin), the first bishop of Toulouse, its construction spanned the 11th to the 13th centuries.

This is a close-up of the beautiful stone portal of the Église Saint-Pierre des Chartreux.

The portal was sculpted in 1613 by Antoine Bachelier, the son of the famous Toulouse Renaissance architect and sculptor Nicolas Bachelier. Crafted from white stone, it creates a striking aesthetic contrast against the iconic red terracotta bricks that give Toulouse its Ville Rose nickname.
